ikkimel die geile, shot in a berlin that does not exist
it is out. ikkimel die geile, the new video for drunken masters and ikkimel, was shot in berlin. not the berlin outside the window. a berlin we synthesised, panorama by panorama, until the machine believed in it enough to let us drive through.
the map as a film set
the core of the project is a pipeline for large-scale 360° panorama synthesis: virtual locations in berlin, generated as full spherical scenes rather than single framed shots. on top of that we built an interactive street view environment, a navigable interface where ai-generated scenes are not prompted and prayed for but directed. you move through the synthetic city in real time, and the navigation itself is the camera work. capture and composition happen inside the interface, the way a location scout and a dop would work, except the location is being hallucinated under their feet.
that inversion is the whole trick. most ai video work treats the model as an oracle: type, wait, accept. we treated it as a place. places can be scouted, blocked, framed, and revisited. oracles cannot.
why street view
because street view is the most honest interface the internet ever produced. a car with a camera mast drove past your house and nobody asked you anything. blurred faces, stitching seams, a compass that lies a little. it is surveillance infrastructure wearing the costume of a public service, and it looks exactly like what it is.
so we recreated it as a surreal early-2000s music video: synthetic map imagery blended with motion design and compositing, pegman logic, the flat daylight of a jpeg that has been re-saved too many times. the aesthetic is not nostalgia. it is the visual language of the moment the internet started photographing us back, replayed with the camera finally pointed somewhere we chose.
the comment section as a review
the video went up and the audience did what audiences do now: they reviewed it in real time, in public, for free. ikkimel is a divisive artist in germany — that was true before we got involved and will be true after — and the comments split along the usual seam. what interested us is that almost nobody was bored.
geisteskrankes video was the highest-voted response by a wide margin, and we have decided to read it as a review. sieht aus wie nachkriegszeit is the one we would have paid for: we built a synthetic berlin out of a surveillance interface and it came back looking like rubble nobody had cleared yet. the bitrate joke lands on the exact thing we were after — the flat daylight of a jpeg re-saved too many times, now available in premium.
and the last comment is the price of admission. work that everyone agrees on has usually agreed to something first.
credits where due
drunken masters and ikkimel gave the machine a reason to exist; a pipeline without a track is just a tech demo. watch the video, then go outside and check whether your street still matches its panorama. ours did not, and we prefer our version.
