launching the journal

for years this site has behaved like a system rather than a publication. you boot it, you inspect it, you step through it. that suits a portfolio. it does not suit thinking out loud, and lately we have wanted to think out loud.

so we are opening a journal. no feed, no algorithm deciding what surfaces, no engagement metric optimising us into a shape we did not choose. just a directory of plain-text entries, compiled into static html and pushed over ftp to a server we control. the same constraints the rest of grotesk.group has always lived under: nothing to keep alive, nothing watching you read.

why bother

because the work keeps producing residue that does not fit anywhere else. field notes from installations. post-mortems on tools we built, broke, and abandoned. arguments we had during the talkative panels that were too good to leave inside a pdf. the occasional manifesto, written mostly for ourselves.

we are a research lab that distrusts the word research when it is used to sound neutral. everything here is positioned. read it as a logbook from a collective that would rather hack the tool than worship it.

how it works

one markdown file per entry. a static generator stitches them together. the result is a corner of the site that reads like a document instead of a control panel — quiet, legible, and built to outlast whatever platform is fashionable this quarter.

if you are reading this, the first entry compiled. that is the whole test for today. the rest is just keeping the log honest.
